Life in the shadow of Nottingham branch of ‘UK’s worst hotel chain’

It dominates the skyline of Maid Marian Way and over the years has hosted thousands of guests in Nottingham. But the Brittania Hotel, part of the country’s worst ranked hotel chain, has been plagued by poor reviews.

It’s the ninth consecutive year the chain has been at the bottom of the list and in Nottingham, the venue is ranked 41 out of 44 hotels in the city on Tripadvisor. But despite making national headlines, people living and working around the site say they haven’t experienced any adverse effects.

Manager of The Roundhouse pub Lisa Bedford said: ‘I’m not aware of this [the ranking] and I’m the manager here and I haven’t heard anything about it. It’s not a good thing to have on our doorstep. We have more tourists from the St James hotel and there are no problems there. I have no knowledge of this affecting us at all, but it wouldn’t be best to have the worst hotel on your doorstep.”

Rae Weston, Manager of Ye Olde Salutation Inn, added: “They’ve been there for years. To be honest, if people ask us where to stay, it’s never been where you suggest staying. I haven’t heard no one say they stay We normally get asked a lot for directions and I’ve never been asked for directions to go in. It’s going to be good for other hotels though.



Britannia Hotel ranks among the worst hotels in Nottingham

Ellie Harrison, 28, said: “We’re not locals but without having been there I don’t know myself how bad it is.” Elsa Smith, 25, said: “I wouldn’t book any of these hotels now, I know they’re the worst chain.”

And resident Harvey Johnston, 46, said: ‘It doesn’t look very nice. I wouldn’t stay there myself.’

The chain that runs the hotel off Maid Marian Way, which was previously used by human traffickers as a brothel, last week cut 1,000 jobs. Additionally, Britannia Hotels has been rated by Which? as the channel where customers were most likely to say they had a problem.

More than half of guests surveyed said they encountered a problem during their stay at the hotel chain, with cleanliness being the most common issue. Britannia scored one out of five stars for bathrooms and two stars for seven other categories such as cleanliness, customer service and value for money.

The Nottingham hotel has a “poor” rating on TripAdvisor. One guest wrote, “There are two good things about this hotel: it’s a good location and it’s clean. Everything else was a joke. here. It’s depressing.

Britannia Hotels was approached for comment but did not respond to requests from Nottinghamshire Live
