Governor Tony Evers in his State of State Address 2020

MADISON (WKOW) – Republican legislative leaders formally invited Gov. Tony Evers on Monday to deliver next year’s state-of-state address on February 15.

Evers’s office said the Democratic governor plans to deliver the speech in person next year. Last year’s address, delivered in January, was the first in state history to be delivered virtually.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and Senate Speaker Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield) sent a letter Monday to Evers requesting a “live and in person” speech at a joint session of the legislature.

Lawmakers sat in the Assembly Hall last year during the speech as they always do; the difference was Evers’ speech broadcast on TV screens and streamed online.

Evers communications director Britt Cudaback said Evers previously proposed February 15 and 22 to legislative leaders as possible dates for the speech. Cudaback said that as of Monday, Evers was still scheduled to deliver the speech in person.

In their letter, Republican leaders focused on worker shortages and supply chain disruptions that have impacted businesses statewide.

“One of the biggest struggles in our state has been to fill the 130,000 job openings, when we have 93,000 people who are not currently working,” the letter said. “Employers continue to offer incentives, but dependence on government has crippled many people and kept them away from autonomy. “

Earlier this year, they called on Evers to reject additional unemployment benefits from the federal government. Evers refused to cut the additional payments, which on their own expired on September 4.

In states that have halted increases in unemployment benefits, there is little evidence that it made a difference in bringing more people back to the workforce. Only nine states had a lower rate unemployment rate in November than Wisconsin’s 3.0%.

Evers’ speech last year focused on issues related to the pandemic, such as the state’s unemployment backlog and the expansion of rural broadband. Federal relief dollars are currently helping efforts on both fronts.

At Summit, US, Canada and Mexico Avoid Thorny Issues https://happy-holi.com/at-summit-us-canada-and-mexico-avoid-thorny-issues/ Fri, 19 Nov 2021 00:43:25 +0000 https://happy-holi.com/at-summit-us-canada-and-mexico-avoid-thorny-issues/ WASHINGTON – President Biden on Thursday welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico to the White House, a diplomatic mission that saw three leaders attempt to form a united front amid trade scuffles, accusations of US protectionism and lingering concerns over growing migration across the US-Mexico border. WASHINGTON – President Biden on Thursday welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico to the White House, a diplomatic mission that saw three leaders attempt to form a united front amid trade scuffles, accusations of US protectionism and lingering concerns over growing migration across the US-Mexico border.

But as they agreed to form a task force on regional supply chain issues, including for essential minerals, and struck a deal to share vaccines, leaders seemed determined to take over diplomatic niceties. to tackle more thorny issues such as trade disputes or the growing number of migrants.

“We can meet any challenge if we just take the time to talk to each other,” Biden said in a meeting with the two leaders on Thursday evening.

The return from the summit after a five-year hiatus signaled an increased appetite among North American leaders to demonstrate a sense of strategic and economic solidarity amid increasing competition from Asia and Europe. The rally also comes at a critical time for the United States, as the disruption of global supply chains and the mass movements of people across the Americas have made cooperation with Mexico and Canada more vital than ever.

“It’s one of the easiest relationships we have,” Biden said in a meeting with Trudeau, ignoring complaints from Canada that the president’s US purchasing policies on goods like electric vehicles have disrupted trade between the two countries.

In his first face-to-face meeting with Mr. López Obrador since becoming President, Mr. Biden, speaking through a translator, said he viewed the United States and Mexico as of equals. The Mexican president hailed Mr. Biden’s plan to grant citizenship to more than 11 million undocumented migrants living in the United States, a proposal that has had little success in Congress.

Throughout the day, every leader refused to answer reporters’ questions about US policies returning asylum seekers to Mexico. Advisers to Mr Biden said the group will discuss humane ways to tackle the root causes that are pushing people north and deal with the flow of fentanyl and other drugs to the US-Mexico border. But they also said the group will not discuss policies that have become flashpoints for immigration activists, including a program that forces some asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are pending. instance.

When asked how the migration issue could be discussed without mentioning these programs, Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, told reporters that an ongoing litigation was preventing the policy, known as name of Staying in Mexico, to be openly discussed, “but certainly the migration will be.”

A day before the summit, more than 70 immigration and human rights organizations urged Biden and his counterparts to discuss what they described as “cruel, ineffective and illegal” immigration policies .

No deal has been reached due to persistent disagreements over how each country has handled its trade commitments. Since Mr. Biden took office, the details of this Trump-era revision of the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, have been disputed. The pact was intended to update Mexican labor laws, encourage auto production in North America, and open up Canadian markets to American dairy farmers.

In recent weeks, the Canadian government has argued that the tax credit offered to American consumers who buy electric vehicles made in the United States violates the agreement. Speaking to reporters at a press conference Monday, Trudeau said the Biden administration’s US shopping ethic was “counterproductive” to promoting trade between the two countries.

“We don’t see it that way,” Psaki told reporters Thursday. “We believe the electric vehicle tax credit is an opportunity to help consumers in this country. “

For its part, the Biden administration accused the Canadian government of practices that favor their domestic dairy farmers and expressed concerns that Mexico’s energy policies are giving state-owned companies an unfair advantage. U.S. officials said Wednesday that Biden plans to reaffirm USMCA provisions in support of labor rights protection, a reference to a dispute settled against Mexico earlier this year.

The leaders reached a vaccine-sharing deal, with Canada and Mexico agreeing to share “millions” of doses with poorer countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, an official said.

For Mr. Biden, the most sensitive talks had to happen with the Mexican president, who has attacked the United States and pursued policies that go against American interests. While Mr. López Obrador has praised President Donald J. Trump for not interfering in Mexican affairs, he has taken a more openly confrontational stance towards American politics since Mr. Biden took office. .

Mexico, long neglected in relations with its neighbors, has gained considerable leverage in a year that has seen a wave of pandemic-fueled migration from Latin America. For the Biden administration, the importance of maintaining strict Mexican enforcement was made clear in September, when thousands of Haitians crossed the border into Texas.

“The balance of power between the Mexican government and the US government has changed due to the circumstances,” said Duncan Wood, vice president of strategy at the Wilson Center. Mexican officials, said Wood, “know they can harm the Biden administration, and they know the Biden administration knows it.”

Again this week, Mr. López Obrador called the US embargo on Cuba “vile” and attacked the Biden administration for helping fund Mexican media groups he described as “opposition publications” . (The president has previously said that US funding of Mexican civil society amounts to “promoting a coup mentality.”)

Vice President Kamala Harris met Mr. López Obrador during his trip to Mexico over the summer and has since been seen as an internal guardian of that relationship. In her own meeting with Mr López Obrador on Thursday, Ms Harris spoke of their common interest in the story, but also “the issue of our mutual concerns about migration and what we will do as partners to deal with, in particular , the root causes of migration. “

Mr. López Obrador, for his part, used a moment during the meeting with Mr. Biden and Mr. Trudeau to warn of growing competition from China and the risks of a harassed global supply chain. .

“The best, the most practical, is to strengthen our economies, strengthen our business operations across North America and the entire continent,” he said. “It is a paradox that so much money is flowing through North America and that Pacific ports are inundated with cargo from Asia.”

Mr. López Obrador also said that migration has “enormous potential” to strengthen each country’s work force, and reminded Mr. Biden of his previous commitment to find a way to provide a path to citizenship for those without. -papers.

“No president in the history of the United States has expressed so much that you have such a clear and certain commitment to improving the situation of migrants,” López Obrador said through an interpreter. “I hope you have the support of Congress and members of the Democratic and Republican parties.”

Toxic algae is nothing new to Austin’s waterways. In 2019, at least five dogs died from ingesting a toxin produced by certain types of freshwater cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, in Lady Bird Lake, followed by more harmful blooms the following year at Red Bud Isle and Festival Beach. Toxins were also found in Highland lakes, most notably in Travis and Austin lakes earlier this year.

Dogs seem particularly vulnerable to toxins produced by these algal blooms, but another type of algal neurotoxin that poses a greater risk to humans has now emerged in Austin. Last month, after receiving a report that someone fell ill after swimming in Barton Creek, the city found regarding the levels of the cylindrospermopsin toxin in Barton Creek, near the popular Sculpture Falls swimming hole. Unlike previous incidents, in which the toxin was detected in the algae itself, at Sculpture Falls, the toxin had entered the water, meaning there is a greater possibility of human exposure to recreational purposes. “People are unlikely to eat large handfuls of coarse seaweed,” said Brent Bellinger, a senior environmental scientist in the Watershed Protection Department, but “your average swimming child is probably swallowing water.” At this time, people and pets are not recommended to swim in Sculpture Falls.

Cylindrospermopsin, like other neurotoxins found in Austin’s waterways – dihydroanatoxin and homoanatoxin-a – can cause nausea, diarrhea, and headaches, with long-term exposure. , internal organ failure. Toxins aren’t always present, but algae are, especially in hot, standing water conditions, typically around June or July in Austin, while receding in winter. The algae found in 2019 were there before, Bellinger said, but that year new “Goldilocks” conditions gave it the ability to produce toxins. A change in nutrients, caused either by runoff from the heavy rains of 2018, or by the arrival of the dreaded zebra mussel, led to these conditions.

“I don’t see it as a coincidence that within two years of the zebra mussels coming into the system, we have toxic algae,” Bellinger told the the Chronicle. Mussels are a “human calamity”, traveling from lake to lake hitchhiking on boats that have not been properly cleaned, eating good phytoplankton that rivals toxic algae and excreting nutrients like phosphorus that lead to growth of cyanobacteria. Boats are not allowed at Sculpture Falls, so it’s unclear how the toxic algae got there.

Poisonous blue-green algae mats like the one pictured have become more common in Austin’s waterways since 2019 (Courtesy of the City of Austin)

The type of flowering that occurs in Austin – called benthic mats – are much less studied than other types of algae that affect large bodies of water, Bellinger explained. Yet global observations are increasing, finding “strong links to climate change, due to changes in our precipitation patterns.” Droughts cause stagnant water, heavy rains spill unfamiliar nutrients and fertilizers, and unusually warm temperatures for the season lead to “cyanobacteria.” [being] in their optimal environment for a longer period of time, ”said Bellinger.

The goal is to be like Alice in Wonderland, Bellinger said. “Alice runs and runs, and she still doesn’t move away from the Red Queen. We want to get away from the Red Queen – the Phoslock is what we’re trying to help us do that.

Since the algae cycle is generally predictable, monitoring can detect harmful blooms before anyone comes in contact with them. Bellinger and his team test toxin levels every two weeks at Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Travis. Tests will decrease with flowering, returning monthly in winter, unless there is a seasonal anomaly. The Lower Colorado River Authority, which monitors the Highland lakes, strongly encourages people and pets to avoid contact with algae in one of the Highland lakes after the agency received reports of several dogs becoming ill and a dog dying after swimming in Lake Travis in the weeks following winter storm Uri.

Earlier this summer, the city contracted with a company called EutroPhix for a pilot of 4 to 5 years of a possible mitigation tactic thanks to a clay product called Phoslock. Phosphorus in freshwater systems is a “limiting nutrient,” which means that too much leads to the production of algae. Phoslock buries the phosphorus, Bellinger explains. “It settles on the surface of the sediment and binds the phosphate ions irreversibly. We are trying to speed up this process in the hope that it will starve the cyanobacteria.” As of June 21, the city treated 21 acres of water around Red Bud Isle with a total of 120,000 pounds of Phoslock, collecting samples before and after three treatments. “The last sampling event, the data looked pretty positive,” Bellinger said.

But Phoslock is expensive: $ 300,000 for 2021 alone, including hardware, application, and lab testing. Bellinger said the next phase would come back in the spring to check phosphorus levels compared to fall: “Do we still have a strong treatment effect? Can we add less around Red Bud next year, and maybe target another part of the tank? Or is there so much organic matter going in that we have to keep adding a lot to Red Bud Isle? Which then makes this mitigation strategy not really feasible in the long term. You want to roll back the system, you don’t I don’t want to run in place. “

The goal is to be like Alice in Wonderland, Bellinger said. “Alice runs and runs, and she still doesn’t get away from the Red Queen. We want to get away from the Red Queen – the Phoslock is what we’re trying to help us do that.

“The hope is that during the winter, with different rainy events, the Red Queen does not come close to us.”

Steph and Dom from Gogglebox were forced to sell their Sandwich mansion after tenants ran into debt of £ 1.8million.

The couple’s beloved home, a hotel called The Salutation, sold for £ 5million last week.

The house went on sale earlier this year, but TV characters were forced to cut the asking price by £ 250,000 after months without a buyer.

Steph and Dom Parker initially bought the property, which featured heavily on Channel 4 hit shows Gogglebox and Four in a Bed, for £ 2.6million in 2004.

They spent several million pounds to restore the Grade I listed property and its gardens, before renting it out to John and Dorothy Fothergill in 2017 to become The Salutation Hotel.

The couple had a five-year lease and were in charge of the day-to-day management of the hotel.

Sadly, the couple accumulated debts of £ 1.8million and the hotel had to close before the COVID-19 pandemic, in January 2020.

The Parkers admitted that the company that ran the hotel would be wound up and guest deposits would be forfeited.

Dom and Steph still made good profits, having sold the house for £ 2.4million more than they paid.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dom said: “We just fell in love with the place. It was like finding gold in a river. We just thought, ‘Oh my God. We must have it. “”

Steph and Dom left Gogglebox in 2016 and currently live in the Canary Islands in Spain.

Asked about their decision to sell the Kent property, Dom added: “Our lives have changed and evolved considerably and we are not in a position to return to Sandwich for good.”

He admitted that the couple “don’t have the energy to run it anymore.”

The Salutation closed early last year with 33 workers sent home after accumulating debts of £ 1.8million.

Earlier this year, accountants revealed the couple were only able to raise £ 26,405 to pay off creditors.

A report sent to Companies House found that hotel catering equipment, furniture company vehicles and stock were all sold, with £ 600 coming from the sale of potted plants and 12,961 £ from the sale of furniture.

However, most of the money has probably been swallowed up by accountants’ fees.

Debts include £ 1.4million owed to ‘investors’, £ 88,000 in taxes, £ 114,000 in staff salaries and the remainder to creditors for the provision of food, drink and services to the company. ‘hotel.

Dom said of the closure last year: “We are sorry to confirm that The Salutation Hotel Ltd, which operates The Salutation, has indeed become insolvent.

“We are in talks with other interested parties and aim to get the hotel back up and running very soon, under new management. “

However, the couple decided to put the hotel up for sale instead.

The former residence of Steph and Dom was built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1912 and consisted of 17 rooms in total.

The property had a whopping 3.7 acres of walled gardens, with some of its land even winning gold at the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show.

The hotel also has an on-site restaurant, run by Michelin-starred chef Shane Hughes.

Many guests booked just to meet Dom and Steph, who would often have been up all night drinking with customers.

There are 17 bedrooms, some with en-suite bathrooms – and one with its own living room – plus a wraparound gallery landing and 14 bathrooms in total.

The gardens are listed by English Heritage and include a large pond with its own island.

They bought the sprawling estate in 2004 and after appearing on the Channel 4 reality show, which started in 2013, opened it as a hotel in 2017.

But last year, the company that ran the company went bankrupt and all 33 employees were sent home.

The liquidators intervened the following month.

Dom revealed that the couple hoped it would reopen as a hotel but sell it.

Aylesford-based real estate agents Rafferty & Pickard now list the Knightrider Street Hotel as “sold under contract”. The asking price was £ 4,750,000.

It is not known whether the new owner plans to use the estate as a hotel or a private home.

Three new studies by urologists at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami address the impact of a healthy plant-based diet on a range of health problems in men -; from diabetes to sexual health.

Plant-based diets are a hot topic for men’s health, but one that many men reject for fear that eating less meat could negatively impact testosterone levels and sexual health.

Patients often ask what they can do to keep prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels low or prevent prostate cancer. “

Mark L. Gonzalgo, MD, PhD, Professor and Vice President, Urology, Miller School

Eating healthy plant-based foods is one of the lifestyle changes men hear and learn for overall health. According to Dr. Gonzalgo, eating a healthy plant-based diet doesn’t necessarily mean eliminating meat, but rather eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, and less animal protein.

Still, misconceptions remain among men about plant-based diets, according to Ranjith Ramasamy, MD, associate professor and director of the Miller School’s Reproductive Urology program.

“Traditionally, men believed that a lot of protein, especially animal protein, was needed to maintain testosterone levels and indirectly related to the maintenance of erectile function,” said Dr Ramasamy.

Researchers at the Miller School conducted three studies, including two abstracts presented at the American Urology Association’s annual meeting in September 2021, suggesting that plant-based diets may improve serum testosterone and erectile function.

Plant food and PSA

Urology resident Ali Mouzannar, MD, presented and was among the authors of “Impact of Plant-Based Diet on PSA Level: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)”, a study of the eating habits of nearly 1,400 men. with PSA levels documented in the NHANES database.

“PSA is a sensitive marker for prostate cancer. Patients with elevated PSA require further evaluation with a prostate biopsy to rule out cancer,” said Dr Mouzannar.

Studying the impact of a plant-based diet on PSA levels is reasonable given what is already known about diets high in animal protein.

“Studies have shown that more aggressive prostate cancer may be associated with high meat consumption. said Mouzannar. “Several other publications suggest that fruits and vegetables may have a protective effect against prostate cancer.”

Dr Mouzannar and colleagues looked at men’s diet and PSA levels and found that men consuming more fruits, vegetables and other healthy plant-based foods and less meat had lower PSA levels. lower than those of men who ate more meat or less healthy diets, including fruit juices, refined grains, potatoes, sugars, artificially sweetened drinks and desserts.

More studies need to be done to see if the diet lowers PSA levels, but in the meantime, urologists and others may refer to the results to answer patient questions.

“The important take-home message from this study is that it appears that adopting a plant-based diet may be associated with lower PSA levels and can certainly be incorporated into ways that patients can experience healthy living conditions. healthier lifestyles, ”said Dr. Gonzalgo, who also is the study’s author.

Other Miller School authors on the study are Manish Kuchakulla, MD, resident in urology; urology resident Ruben Blachman Braun, MD, M.Sc .; medical student Sirpi Nackeeran; urology resident Maria Becerra, MD; assistant professor Bruno Nahar, MD; associate professor of urology and oncology Sanoj Punnen, MD; associate professor of urology and oncology Chad Ritch, MD, MBA; and professor and chair of urology Dipen Parekh, MD

No ED link, testosterone

Contrary to the belief that eating more animal protein improves erectile function and testosterone levels in men, Miller School investigators found no impact on testosterone levels from a healthy plant-based diet. and a positive impact of eating more plant-based foods and animal protein on erection. function, according to Ruben Blachman-Braun, resident in urology at Miller School, MD, M.Sc., who presented and wrote “Plant-based diets are associated with decreased risk of erectile dysfunction.”

Dr Blachman-Braun and his colleagues studied nearly 2,550 men in the NHANES database.

“Of these, 1,085 had some degree of erectile dysfunction and after performing an analysis, we showed that increased consumption of plant-based foods is associated with a decreased risk of erectile dysfunction,” said said Dr Blachman-Braun. “This does not mean that eating a plant-based diet improves erections. However, it does show that eating a plant-based diet does not negatively affect erections and having a healthier lifestyle with increased food consumption at herbal can potentially lead to better erections. “

The other authors of this study are medical student Eliyahu Kresch; medical student Sirpi Nackeeran; Manish Kuchakulla and Dr Ramasamy.

In another study published earlier this year in the World Journal of Urology, Dr Ramasamy and his coauthors analyzed the health and diet information of 191 participants in the NHANES database. The plant-based diet index, or the amount of plant-based foods in men’s diets, did not predict and had no impact on serum testosterone levels.

The co-authors of this study were Manish Kuchakulla, Sirpi Nackeeran and Ruben Blachman-Braun.

The two studies presented to AAU were featured in its press release, highlighting the relevance of the topic, according to Dr Ramasamy.

“We are on the verge of understanding how living a healthy life with less animal protein and more of a plant-based diet with more vegetables and fruit is not only better for your heart, but also good for your health. men, including sex life and testosterone levels, ”said Dr. Ramasamy.

With the COVID-19 outbreak in eastern Tennessee, five medical professionals from across the region gathered on Wednesday to address the growing crisis.

Dr James Shamieyah of the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Dr Mark Browne of Covenant Health, Dr Joe Childs of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, Dr Frank Beuerlein of Tennova Healthcare and Dr Harold Naramore of Blount Memorial Hospital detailed several Eastern aspects Tennessee’s fight against the virus at Wednesday’s virtual meeting.

Shamiyeh spoke first, providing an update on collective hospital data from health facilities in the region. Shamiyeh presented a number of sobering statistics, highlighting in particular the fact that only 2.6% of intensive care beds across the region are currently available. Shamiyeh also pointed out that the current wave of COVID-19 has hit eastern Tennessee harder than the winter peak earlier this year.

As each of the healthcare professionals discussed a different aspect of the virus and its impact on each of their communities and the region as a whole, there was a common thread running through each segment of physician: getting vaccinated.

Childs, who addressed the impact of COVID on children, said the best way to protect vulnerable children is to get vaccinated.

“The most important thing you can do in your household right now – if you have children at risk for COVID or children you definitely want to prevent this infection from – is to vaccinate the adults around them,” Childs said. .

Naramore spoke last and discussed the staffing issues plaguing healthcare facilities amid the current COVID outbreak. The Blount Memorial chief medical officer once again begged residents of eastern Tennessee to get vaccinated, not only to protect themselves, but to protect their communities.

“I’m going to say some of the things you’ve heard before: vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate. Please consider the vaccine. Please watch the science,” Naramore said. “None of us have a crystal ball as to how long this will last or how bad it will get. But we can work together in our community to improve where we are at and help each other now, together. . “

The popularity of Rubina Dilaik is increasing every year. With his many fans supporting his personal and professional moves, actor Shakti admits his “heart is filled with gratitude for all their love.” She adds, “As an artist, the greatest reward for you is the love and appreciation you receive. It doesn’t match the rewards there. I realized that the life of an artist is dedicated to the public. We strive to entertain and perform for our audience. When we are loved and accepted immensely, it gives us validation of who we are. ”

Recently, Dilaik was number seven on Twitter’s Top 10 Hashtags list in the first half of 2021. She shares that after her victory over Bigg Boss earlier this year, she realized the impact of social media. She explains further: “If I said I’m happy to be talked about globally, that would be an understatement. But, for me, the takeaway from Twitter trends is the love of my fans. I strive to make my work speak for me and recognition for this work is what we all seek. To be recognized on a global platform for your work is second to none. These trends prove how much people love me, talk about my work and the effort they put into showing it. It is commendable that they are so genuinely dedicated and reiterate their love for me that I am forced to work even harder not to let them down.

Although the actor enjoys social media, she also states that it is just a tool between her and her fans and you don’t have to go crazy about it. “I keep everything in life in a balanced state, this also applies to my appearance on social media and its impact on my state of mind. Adapting to all trends, keeping tabs on what people are saying about you, or responding to hateful comments isn’t important. Be who you are and know how to use social media. I am aware of what I publish, of what I want to represent on the platform and also of what I want to absorb from it. I don’t pay attention to the comments and the trolling.

She adds, “When I notice how much effort and energy my fans put into making my music videos or videos go viral, I recognize that. We have to learn the art of rejection and recognition. In the end, it’s for your own sanity. I’m not swayed by what’s going on on social media and neither can I keep posting because I want to get attention. There is a fine line that m “helps to balance. I have to keep a balance or things can get overwhelming,” she concludes.

Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, better known as CATL, has invested 100 million RMB (AU $ 21 million) to establish a new Shanghai-based automotive science and technology company.

CATL – well known for supplying lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells to companies like Tesla and Nio – on Tuesday established CATL (Shanghai) New Energy Technology company, with registered capital of RMB 100 million, according to the Chinese trade information platform Qichacha.

Formed in 2011 and based in the Chinese coastal city of Ningde, CATL is today the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries and supplies automakers such as Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Nio.

According to energy analysts Wood Mackenzie, “CATL currently leads the world in lithium-ion cell production, holding 490 GWh of total lithium-ion cell manufacturing capacity. The company is also a large consumer of lithium.

Earlier this year, it was reported that CATL was planning to start supplying solid-state battery cells with a density of over 350Wh / kg – starting with a short-term delivery of 200Wh / kg or even 230Wh. / kg, before increasing to as much as 350Wh / kg and 400Wh / kg long-term.

The news came less than a year after CATL announced it was able to start manufacturing electric vehicle batteries that can last over a million kilometers, or over 1.6 million kilometers.

Around the same time, CATL received a strong seal of approval from the father of lithium-ion batteries, Sir John Goodenough, who said the progress of CATL’s new 21C lab could significantly benefit the company. :

“As an industry leader in lithium-ion battery technology, the advancements made by members of the 21C Lab can significantly benefit society,” wrote Goodenough, currently president of the Virginia H. Cockrell Engineering Department. Centennial at the University of Austin, Texas.

“I believe that with the establishment of the 21C Lab, CATL can introduce more inventions in battery technology that will allow the world to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”

At the end of June, CATL extended its battery supply contract with Tesla until 2025, promising to continue supplying Tesla’s gigafactory in Shanghai with its cobalt-free lithium-iron-phosphate cells which are less energy dense than cells. NCA supplied by Panasonic, but which can be regularly charged to 100%.

“The agreement signifies further recognition by Tesla of the product quality and production capacity of [our company], and will help strengthen the long-term cooperative relationship between the company and Tesla, ”CATL said in the statement.

And last month, CATL unveiled new battery technology that runs on sodium rather than lithium. Despite having an energy density of just 160Wh / kg – still relatively high, but lower than that of CATL’s LFP battery cells – a sodium-ion battery can charge to 80% in just 15 minutes.

“Sodium-ion technology has long been touted for commercial battery use due to the low cost and high abundance of sodium compared to lithium, and CATL producing large-scale sodium-ion batteries shows that the attractiveness of the technology is happening sooner rather than later, ”said Wood Max Reid, Mackenzie research analyst.

“The lower energy of the sodium-ion cells suggests that the technology may be more suited to stationary energy storage applications which are less restrictive, while the unveiling of battery packs combining both sodium-ion cells and lithium-ion could indicate a compromise in terms of performance. for low-cost electric vehicles, with the potential to disrupt the mass market.
